Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time – October 25, 2026
Reading: Matt. 22:34–40 The greatest commandments for peace and our salvation. Dcn. Bill Kenney
Imagine if Jesus said the greatest commandment was, “Pay your taxes”, or “Return people’s cloaks if you borrow them”, or [“No turn on red” or “No jaywalking” or “Don’t be late for or leave early from Mass”.] Our relationship with him and with others would be quite different. All other laws would be secondary, including the ones Jesus actually told the disingenuous scholar in our Gospel reading from St. Matthew.
It is because of the great love God has for each one of us that Jesus gives the answer he does: the ancient Shema prayer— “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength”. And he adds another, ”You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
The Jewish people had hundreds of laws in the Torah for their Temple worship and approved ways of living. It would be hard to remember them all let alone live by them in every life situation. The two greatest commandments that Jesus tells us simplify things: they are easy to remember, easy to quote, all the laws are contained within them. But even with only two, are they easy for us to live by? It is not just a matter of defining laws to structure our faith, worship, and living, although it does that too, these two laws are the way to our eternal salvation, and we need to follow them.
To love God with all your being, along with others, as yourself is the real key to our salvation- our true calling as Christians. Knowing and believing this helps to guide and prioritize our life’s thoughts, behaviors, and goals. Like the Thessalonians we are to. “… turn from idols, to serve the living and true God.” We pray in our love and worship of God for his blessings in our lives and those of others. We ask God to enlighten us with his Spirit, through the sacraments, and help us to fulfill his will in our lives.
Serving others is loving God Himself in as much as we see the face of Jesus in others. Love of God must always be actualized through love of neighbor. How much are we to love our neighbor? Jesus says as much as you love yourself. To love others as yourself sets the bar pretty high. We always want to be happy and fulfilled in everything we do, but that only truly happens when our relationship, our love of God and others is a priority. As St. Paul says in Romans 13, “Love does no evil to the neighbor; hence, love is the fulfillment of the law.” The outcome, the fulfillment of this law of love, is peace.
Consider as a daily reflection- How do I express my love for God? What change can I make in my daily life so that I can love God more fully? What random acts of kindness can I take today to express love for a neighbor? St. Teresa of Calcutta said, “At the end of life, we are going to be judged on the basis of our love for one another.”
We’re not perfect. Due to our free will, our love for God, self, or others cannot be commanded. If a person cannot accept and love themselves as someone infinitely cherished by God, they will be unable to truly love others. True self-love always begins with receiving God’s love first — standing in awe of the fact that God, out of love for sinful man was incarnate, suffered, died, and rose again in atonement for our sins and for our everlasting life.
In our worship and love of God, we give our humble gifts of bread and wine and of ourselves to be transformed and consecrated into the Body and Blood of Christ in the Eucharist. This is the summit and perfection of the love of God, of self, and of others in our lives given to us as gift from the Father.
For it is out of his great love for us that God puts these greatest of commands at the forefront of our lives and faith- that we may use these as a compass to guide us to our salvation. Let us allow God to love us in our imperfections, so that we may love ourselves and every person God places in our pilgrim path, for peace in our world and for the glory of God.
